'Mistrust' Sketchbook Experiments

Updated: Feb 3, 2019

Although starting the project with the intention of creating a drawing, I wanted to experiment to find the most suitable medium for my outcome. This not only involved several different techniques and media for drawing, but also involved using oil paint as a way of introducing colour into my project.

Starting off with several drawing techniques and styles enabled me to experiment with graphite pencil, charcoal and ordinary pencils in a range of tones. I was therefore able to test each individual tone, as well as the different drawing styles that I could adopt for my final piece. I personally found graphite pencil to be the most suitable for the outcome I hoped to achieve due to the soft, yet detailed appearance of the images. Charcoal lacked precision and detail whilst creating dark tones that may present problems when combining it with the projection. Pencil, although almost identical to graphite in appearance proved to be slightly harder to manipulate when blending the tones, with graphite offering me more opportunity to do so. The tones were softer, whilst maintaining some of the texture in the medium.

Oil paint for me, although experimented in was ruled out quickly. Not only was my last piece conducted in oil paint, but the use of colour could later pose problems when projecting another image over the top. The tones in the projection may not match those in the painting. Creating a painting to my intended large scale would also take a considerable amount of time and therefore restrict me further. I was however able to attend oil painting workshops to develop my skills with the medium, especially when working with skin tones.

I also conducted experiments with the projector over my drawings to see which medium cooperated best with the projected image. This further proved to me that graphite pencil would be the best option to go with.
