Lucy Mckenzie

Mckenzie's paintings will be a huge inspiration for my painting 'Predator' due to the incredible amounts of detail she is able to accomplish in her small scale paintings, often collated to form a larger collaged composition. Her work was exhibited at the Roland Levinsky Gallery in Plymouth, in a show entitled 'Slow Painting' (24th January- 29th March 2020) so I was able to see the detail and size up close in person. As I will be attempting to recreate polaroid photographs within my paintings the scale of these in comparison to the composition will be incredibly challenging to create. I have never painted on such a small scale before and tend to favour larger compositions so although I am incredibly nervous of messing up and not being able to create such detail, at the same time it's an exciting challenge to take on.

Mckenzie's artworks update a nineteenth-century form of 'conversation piece' work, originally a style of trompe l'oeil painting, which comprises of letters, newspaper clippings, books, etc, into a single composition. Her piece 'Quodlibet XI (Janette Murray)', (2011) in particular mimics a bulletin board. Her artworks 'cryptically collapse time', which is also an aspect I wish to incorporate into my paintings through the movement of time being portrayed through stationary, static compositions.
