Forensic Hyper-realist Analysis through Painting Process

Hyper-realism blurs the line between reality and art and is considered as an effective advancement of photorealism. 'Photorealists aimed to essentially reproduce photographs as precisely as possible so that the human eye could not distinguish between the original and the resultant painting, whereas Hyperrealists take the technique even further.' (Lansroth, 2015).

Hyperrealism can be traced back to 1973 and has since aimed to create an atmosphere of surrealism as nobody sees the world in such detail. Jean Baudrillard's philosophy of hyperrealism is 'The simulation of something which never really existed' (Dumitriu, n.d.). The textures, surfaces, shadows and lighting painted to appear clearer is essentially what defines a hyperrealist painting, which is what I aim to capture within my artworks.

This acute attention to detail created a surreal image, which resembles that of the detective work carried out by a forensic team when conducting an investigation into a crime scene. When searching a crime scene every inch of ground is inspected in search for potential evidence. My painting resembles this due to my gradual process of building up each element within the scene, often taking hours to create each element in hyperrealistic detail. My painting process, therefore, resembles that of the forensic analysis carried out on a crime scene.
