Experiments - Morbid Fascination

Conducting experiments throughout the project enabled me to practice creating the right tones for the larger artwork, whilst allowing me to explore the different aspects of the compositons in detail. I therefore took them as an opportunity to present an alternate viewpoint on the individual elements, revealing previously hidden or obscure parts from the larger composition.

Creating these alternate viewpoints helped encompass the detective like aspect within the narrative of my work. As the audience acts as the inquisitor/detective within my project these small snapshots offer detailed evidence within the narrative, similar to that of photos taken of a crime scene by a detective in the search for evidence.

The alternate perspectives help create the sense of moving image when comparing the mini experiments to the larger originals. Seeing that objects have shifted position, such as the change in the hand holding the glasses, creates the sensation of a live space in which time has proceeded, and objects have been moved, but by who?

I did not originally intend on displaying these small snapshots of evidence amongst the larger two compositions, however, as previously stated, they offer an alternate view to the scene which would aid the audience and also make them question their prior perspective of the narrative. Had Covid-19 not interrupted our ability to hold a physical degree show, they would have been presented alongside 'Prey' and 'Predator', but at a slight distance so that the links between the paintings are not immediately made. This would have enabled them to deduct their own theories on the narrative, whilst the mini compositions suggests new evidence and narratives they may have not previously considered.
