The majority of the time I create a painting or a drawing, I use a reference photo to work from. As I wanted to include certain elements in the scene, I decided to construct the composition in a photoshoot. This enabled me to arrange the scene, whilst enabling them to act as naturally as possible. Although placing them in certain positions around the table, I gave them free rein to act how they pleased, which is what gave me the natural expressions and actions. The ripping of the shirt was never planned, and the fact that I was able to catch this adds to the atmosphere within the scene. The models were in fact drinking alcohol as well, which further creates a natural scene. The final image captures the typical drinking scene perfectly, whilst enabling me to manipulate the composition to include certain elements and hidden symbols.
In order to create the perfect image I had to edit, and combine several photos into one. Certain figures were taken and manipulated, whilst the lighting had to be drastically adjusted in some cases. Photoshop enabled me to build up the composition to create a natural looking image. Below are some of the photos that I used with the sections I took from them highlighted.
